You can send them to any of my villages, no one attacks me. Plus Im online pretty much 24/7 so in case anyone stupidly did I could always send them back to you.

Also you can attack a friendly gaul with your settlers and get them stuck in the traps. This is by far the safest place to keep settlers.
Just let your friend know you are attacking with settlers, make sure he has traps ready and no defenders.

Reinforce one of your oases, or another alliance member's.
Nobody usually attacks them, just check the it's 7x7 first.
